Brili St. George Ruins

Situated in the high-mountain landscape of the Racha region, near the village of Brili in the Oni municipality, stand the remains of the former St. George Church, locally known as Brili St. George Naeklesiari. This site, a quiet vestige of the medieval era, offers a look into the spiritual and communal life that once thrived in these remote highland settlements.

Medieval Architecture and Origins

In Georgian, the term naeklesiari specifically denotes a place where a church once stood, and this site is a prime example of the regional architectural tradition. Historical records and the remaining masonry suggest this was a modest, single-hall structure. The volcanic tuff and limestone stones scattered across the perimeter are characteristic of historic Rachan construction techniques. Unlike the grand, domed cathedrals found in lowland urban centers, these highland churches were often intimate, stone-built halls designed to serve the daily religious needs of village communities. The site remains unexcavated, leaving its exact construction date a subject of local lore, though it aligns with the period of active church building in mountain Georgia during the medieval centuries.

Accessing the Site

Reaching the ruins requires traveling into the upper Oni municipality. The village of Brili is accessible by road, but visitors should be prepared for narrow mountain segments and potential surface irregularities depending on recent weather. The final approach to the ruins is on foot; the path is generally clear, but visitors should wear sturdy hiking boots for stability on the uneven, sloped terrain.

• Seasonality: The best access is from late May through early October. Outside this window, heavy snow can make the road to Brili difficult for standard vehicles.
