Beghouri Lake
Beghouri Lake is a high-altitude water body situated in the Racha region, positioned at the edge of the Shovi-Utsera mountain corridor. Unlike larger, more accessible lakes in the area, this basin serves as a quiet point of reflection for the surrounding high peaks of the Greater Caucasus. Its presence is defined by a slow, glacial feed and the surrounding subalpine meadows that define the landscape of this specific altitude in Western Georgia.
Geological Origins and Hydrology
Beghouri Lake sits at an elevation where the soil composition shifts from dense, broad-leaf forests to rocky, high-alpine pasture. The basin is primarily sustained by meltwater and seasonal precipitation, causing its surface area to fluctuate significantly throughout the year. This hydrological behavior is typical for the Racha karst plateaus, where subterranean drainage systems often influence the surface level of standing water.
The Landscape of Racha
The surrounding geography is a limestone-rich environment, typical of the Racha region. The slopes above the lake provide a clear view of the transition between the deep green valleys and the sharper, more jagged peaks of the Greater Caucasus. Because the area remains largely undisturbed by large-scale development, the shoreline acts as an indicator for local biodiversity, including seasonal wildflower blooms that cover the plateau from late spring through August. The water itself remains cool year-round, influenced by the high-elevation ambient temperatures and shaded gullies that feed the main basin.
