Algeti River

Duration: 1-2 days Free

The Algeti River is a prominent waterway in the Kvemo Kartli region of eastern Georgia, serving as a right tributary to the Mtkvari (Kura) River. With a length of 108 kilometers and a basin area of 763 square kilometers, it originates on the southern slopes of the Trialeti Range, near the Kldekari fortress. The upper reaches of the Algeti flow through a deep, forested gorge, which is protected as part of the Algeti National Park. This area is renowned for its rich biodiversity, including rare species of Caucasian fir and oriental spruce. As the river descends towards the plains, it passes by the historic town of Manglisi and the Tetritskaro municipality. A significant feature along its course is the Algeti Reservoir, built for irrigation purposes, which also serves as a popular spot for fishing and recreation. The river's flow is primarily sustained by rain and groundwater, with a noticeable increase in water levels during the spring rains. The Algeti valley is rich in archaeological and historical monuments, making it a fascinating destination for both nature lovers and history enthusiasts exploring the lesser-known paths of Georgia.
