Abaata Fortress, Gagra
Abaata Fortress is a defensive complex in Gagra on the Black Sea coast, within Abkhazia. The site includes the 6th-century Abaata Church, one of the oldest Christian buildings in the area.
Fortifications and church
The fortress combined military and religious functions: heavy limestone walls protected a garrison while the church served as a spiritual center. The austere Abkhazian architectural style reflects both roles.
Visiting
Combine the fortress walk with the church interior and views toward the coast. Check local access conditions before travel.
