Zemo Orozmani is a settlement situated on the volcanic plateau of the Dmanisi Municipality in the Kvemo Kartli region of Georgia. The area surrounding Zemo Orozmani holds immense importance for the study of early human migration. In 2022, excavations near the village uncovered a 1.8-million-year-old hominin tooth. This discovery, located just a few kilometers from the famous Dmanisi archaeological site, reinforces the region's status as one of the oldest known sites of early human presence outside of Africa. The find demonstrates that early Homo species inhabited a wider geographical area across the Kvemo Kartli valleys than previously documented. Ongoing research in the Orozmani area continues to yield fossils of extinct Pleistocene flora and fauna, providing a detailed record of the prehistoric environment.

Geography and Environment

Zemo Orozmani sits at an elevation that provides sweeping views of the surrounding plateau. The terrain is largely defined by the nearby Mashavera River basin and the basaltic lava flows that shaped the topography millions of years ago. The local climate is continental, marked by warm summers and relatively cold, dry winters. The vegetation consists mainly of steppe grasses and sparse forest patches along the ravines, supporting small-scale livestock grazing and crop cultivation.

Access to Zemo Orozmani is primarily via local roads connecting the village to the town of Dmanisi. Driving from Dmanisi takes only a short time, passing through standard regional road networks that are generally navigable year-round, though winter conditions may occasionally require appropriate tires. The settlement itself is small, with unpaved internal roads and footpaths connecting the residential structures and surrounding agricultural fields.
