Zemo Kedi

Zemo Kedi is an agricultural settlement defined by its linear street layout, stretching across the arid plains of the Kakheti region. Located in the Dedoplistsqaro Municipality, the village serves as a localized farming hub on the expansive Shiraki Plain, known for its vast wheat fields and wide pasturelands.

Geography and Landscape

Situated in the southeastern extremity of Georgia, the terrain around Zemo Kedi is characterized by a dry, steppe-like environment. The elevation gradually drops towards the Azerbaijani border. The soil here is highly fertile but relies heavily on seasonal rainfall, making it a critical zone for dryland farming. Trees are relatively sparse across the plains, mostly planted as windbreaks to protect the crops from sweeping valley winds and soil erosion.

Economy and Daily Life

The economy of Zemo Kedi is fundamentally agrarian. Large-scale cultivation of cereals, particularly winter wheat and barley, dominates the surrounding landscape. Sunflowers are also a common sight during the summer months. Livestock grazing, especially sheep farming, is another primary occupation for the residents, with flocks moving across the plains depending on the season and available grazing land.

Reaching Zemo Kedi involves driving through the regional center of Dedoplistsqaro. The local road network connects the village to the neighboring settlement of Kvemo Kedi and eventually ties into the broader Kakhetian highway system. The roads are primarily flat, following the contours of the plain, but can be unpaved or rugged in the deeper agricultural zones connecting the farmsteads.
