Vartsikhe is a village located in the Baghdati Municipality of the Imereti region, Georgia. Situated at the confluence of the Rioni and Khanistskali rivers, the village has long served as a strategic point in the historical landscape of Western Georgia.

History and Significance

Vartsikhe is best known for its historical role as a primary fortress of the Egrisi (Lazica) kingdom. In historical sources, it was often referred to as Rodopolis. During the 6th-century Lazic War between the Byzantine and Sassanid Empires, the fortress was a vital military stronghold due to its control over the transit routes connecting the coastal regions to the interior of Georgia. The remains of the ancient fortifications serve as a reference point for the village's long-standing position in the region's defense systems.

Geography and Landscape

The village lies on the Kolkheti Lowland, characterized by its fertile alluvial soil and proximity to major waterways. The terrain is predominantly flat, typical of the Rioni river basin, which facilitates local agriculture and viticulture.
