Timotesubani

Timotesubani is a small mountain settlement located in the Borjomi Municipality of the Samtskhe-Javakheti region. It lies along the Gudjarula River valley, approximately 17 kilometers south of the town of Borjomi. The village is accessible via the road that connects Borjomi to the Akhaltsikhe region, making it a distinct point of transit for those traveling through the valley toward the higher mountainous districts.

Geography and Access

Situated at an elevation of roughly 1,000 meters above sea level, the village is enclosed by the forested slopes of the Lesser Caucasus. The road leading to Timotesubani follows the river gorge, characterized by dense deciduous and coniferous forests. The settlement maintains a quiet, rural atmosphere, functioning primarily as a residential area for local families involved in agriculture and small-scale livestock farming.

The Timotesubani Monastery

The village is primarily recognized for the Timotesubani Monastery, an important site of medieval Georgian ecclesiastical architecture. The main structure, known as the Church of the Dormition, was constructed during the late 12th and early 13th centuries, largely attributed to the patronage of the Mkhargrdzeli noble family. The cathedral is notable for its use of pink-toned stone, a common material in the region, and its high architectural proportions.

Inside, the church preserves fragments of 13th-century murals. These artworks are historically significant, representing the decorative styles of the era. The monastery complex is set slightly apart from the main residential cluster of the village, providing a quiet space overlooking the gorge. Visitors often reach this site by continuing along the regional road that runs through the Borjomi Gorge.

Local Environment

The area surrounding the village is marked by riverine landscapes and steep mountain paths. The Gudjarula River runs adjacent to the village, contributing to the humid, temperate climate typical of the Borjomi valley. Hiking is common in the hills directly behind the village, where local trails lead through forestry tracks maintained by the regional environmental agencies. The village infrastructure remains modest, focusing on traditional residential development rather than commercial tourism facilities.
