Tabatskuri

Tabatskuri is a high-altitude settlement located on the shore of Lake Tabatskuri in the Borjomi Municipality of the Samtskhe-Javakheti region. Positioned at an elevation of approximately 2,000 meters above sea level, it stands as one of the highest permanently inhabited villages in Georgia. The settlement is defined by its rugged, volcanic surroundings and its extreme isolation, which has dictated the lifestyle of its residents for generations.

Road Access and Connectivity

Access to Tabatskuri is restricted by its geographical position. Reaching the village requires navigating unpaved, mountainous roads that connect it to the broader Borjomi and Akhalkalaki networks. During the winter months, heavy snowfall often renders these routes difficult or impassable for standard passenger vehicles. Visitors intending to reach the village should rely on four-wheel-drive vehicles and local knowledge, as road conditions change rapidly due to altitude and weather patterns. The village serves as a remote trailhead for hikers exploring the Javakheti plateau, but infrastructure remains minimal.

Geography and Landscape

The village is situated on a peninsula extending into Lake Tabatskuri, a volcanic lake known for its significant depth and cold temperatures. The surrounding terrain is part of the volcanic highlands, characterized by vast, grassy plains and a lack of dense forest cover. This environment supports a specific microclimate marked by long, severe winters and short, cool summers. The absence of traditional tree lines provides expansive views across the plateau, which is dotted with basaltic rock formations.

Economy and Daily Life

The local economy is centered primarily on small-scale animal husbandry and seasonal agriculture, limited by the short growing season typical of high-altitude environments. Fishing in the lake has traditionally supplemented the local diet and economy. In recent years, limited tourism-related services have emerged, focusing on providing basic accommodation for travelers passing through the region. Because of its remote nature, the village maintains a quiet, agrarian character, with many residents relying on subsistence practices to manage the challenges of the high-altitude climate.
