Village

Saro

A historic highland village located on the Erusheti plateau in the Aspindza Municipality, known for its cyclopean fortress and medieval architecture.

Village in Aspindza Municipality

Saro is situated on a high plateau in the Aspindza Municipality, within the Samtskhe-Javakheti region of southern Georgia. Positioned at an elevation of approximately 1,450 meters above sea level, the village is located south of the Mtkvari River valley. Access to Saro is primarily via a road that climbs from the regional center of Aspindza, which lies roughly 10–12 kilometers to the north. The village acts as a remote highland settlement, maintaining its connection to the valley floor through this primary road link.

Geography and Landscape

The village rests on the southern slope of the Erusheti Range, overlooking the dramatic canyon of the Mtkvari River. The surrounding terrain is characterized by rocky outcrops, sparse high-altitude vegetation, and a climate typical of the Javakheti plateau, featuring cool summers and long, cold winters. Due to its elevated position, the area offers clear views of the surrounding volcanic landscapes that define this part of the country.

Historical Significance

Saro is noted for its archaeological layers and architectural history. The site contains the remains of a prehistoric cyclopean fortress, indicative of long-term human habitation in this strategic high-altitude location. The village structures exhibit traditional regional masonry techniques using local stone. Within the village, the Church of the Archangels, a structure dating back to the medieval period, serves as a primary historical landmark. The presence of these ancient fortifications and religious buildings points to the village's historical role as a defensive outpost guarding the approaches to the southern highlands.

Local Economy

Historically, the economy of Saro has been centered on animal husbandry and subsistence farming, consistent with the limitations imposed by the harsh climate and rocky soil of the plateau. Sheep and cattle breeding remain primary activities for the remaining households. While the village has experienced population decline common to many remote highland settlements in Georgia, it remains a site of interest for researchers studying medieval architecture and ancient defensive systems.
