Martkofi is a historical village located in the Gardabani Municipality of the Kvemo Kartli region, situated on the slopes of the Ialno Range. The village occupies a strategic position at the transition between the Kartli lowlands and the foothills of the Trialeti range, influencing its long-standing role as a defensive and religious center.

Historical Significance

Martkofi is well-regarded for its deep historical roots, particularly its association with early Christian history in Georgia. The village is most famous for the Martkofi Monastery (also known as the Convent of St. Anton of Martkofi), located on the nearby mountain slope. According to tradition, this site was established in the 6th century by Anton of Martkofi, one of the Thirteen Assyrian Fathers who played a pivotal role in the spread of Christianity in the region. The monastery has undergone numerous reconstructions throughout the centuries, reflecting the complex historical cycles of invasion and restoration common in the Kartli region.
