Village

Khornabuji

A village in Dedoplistsqaro Municipality, situated north of the regional center near the historical Khornabuji Fortress.

Village in Dedoplistsqaro Municipality

Khornabuji is a settlement in the Dedoplistsqaro Municipality of the Kakheti region, located just a few kilometers to the north of the municipal center, Dedoplistsqaro. It is positioned along the road connecting the municipal center with the northern reaches of the Iori plateau. The proximity to the town of Dedoplistsqaro ensures that residents and visitors have immediate access to regional services and infrastructure.

Geography and Access

The village sits within the semi-arid landscape characteristic of the Shiraki and Iori plateaus. Access to Khornabuji is primarily via the paved road leading north from Dedoplistsqaro. The terrain surrounding the village is marked by undulating hills that gradually transition toward the higher elevations of the Gombori Range to the west and the more rugged terrain of the Vashlovani protected areas to the east. The local climate is typically continental, with relatively dry summers and mild winters.

Historical Context

The area surrounding the modern village of Khornabuji is historically significant. The name is most famously associated with the nearby Khornabuji Fortress (also known as the Fortress of Queen Tamar), which stands on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Iori valley. While the fortress is a separate archaeological and historical site situated on the outskirts of the village, it serves as a primary marker for the local history, dating back to the early medieval period and functioning as a strategic defensive point for the historical kingdom of Kakheti.

Economy and Settlement

The local economy is largely agricultural, relying on the cultivation of cereals and, to a lesser extent, viticulture, which is common throughout the Kakheti region. Small-scale livestock farming also contributes to the livelihood of the residents. The settlement itself is organized in a linear pattern following the primary road network. Recent infrastructure improvements in the Dedoplistsqaro Municipality have maintained the road links, facilitating the movement of agricultural goods and local traffic toward the regional hub.
