Municipality in Imereti

Khoni Municipality, positioned on the historical territory of the Kingdom of Colchis, is deeply integrated into the regional trade-caravan routes. The presence of late Bronze Age settlements and Hellenistic currency ("Colchian white" coins) highlights a continuous pattern of habitation driven by the fertile soil of the Tskhenistsqali river basin. Khoni comprises approximately 40 villages. The village of Chais Meurneoba (literally "Tea Farm") serves as a lexical artifact of Soviet central planning, memorializing the era when western Georgia was transformed into the primary tea supplier for the USSR. Furthermore, the presence of the Okatse Canyon near Zeda Gordi and the Kinchkha Waterfall illustrates the region's recent pivot toward ecotourism to counter rural population decline, which saw Khoni's population fall from 32,548 in 1959 to roughly 21,123.
