Jokolo

Jokolo is a village situated in the Pankisi Gorge, within the Akhmeta Municipality of the Kakheti region. Access to the village is primarily provided by the regional road connecting it to the town of Akhmeta, which lies to the southwest. The route follows the Alazani River valley, serving as the main artery for the communities residing within the gorge.

Geography and Landscape

The village sits at an elevation of approximately 600 meters above sea level, nestled on the banks of the Alazani River. The landscape is characterized by the transition from the low-lying plains of Kakheti to the higher ridges of the Greater Caucasus. The surrounding terrain is dominated by forests and agricultural plots, which define the local land use.

Settlement Character

Jokolo serves as one of the central villages in the upper part of the Pankisi Gorge. The settlement is largely residential, with a layout typical of the region, featuring houses dispersed along the valley floor. Agriculture and livestock farming remain the primary economic activities for the local population. The village reflects the distinct demographic and cultural history of the Kist people, who settled in this part of Georgia in the 19th century.

Connectivity is facilitated by the paved road that enters the gorge from Akhmeta. While the road is maintained for year-round access, travelers should note that the terrain becomes more rugged moving further north into the mountains. Within the village, movement is primarily local, consisting of residential streets and paths leading to agricultural fields and the riverbank.
