Gugutiantkari

A village in the Gori municipality on the right bank of the Charebula River, known for its location near the occupation line and the resilience of its community.

Village · Gori municipality · Municipality in Shida Kartli

Geographical Location

Gugutiantkari is situated on the Shida Kartli plain, on the right bank of the Charebula River. The village lies at an elevation of 920 meters above sea level and is located approximately 32 kilometers from the city of Gori. It belongs to the Mereti administrative unit.

Life Near the Occupation Line

Gugutiantkari is one of the villages directly adjacent to the Russian-occupied territories of Georgia. The daily life of its residents is defined by its proximity to the occupation line, which presents significant challenges. In 2019, the village gained international attention due to intensive "borderization" activities. Russian occupation forces installed barbed wire and fences that cut through private properties and residential areas, forcing some families to abandon their homes.

Local Context and Resilience

Despite the constant pressure and the physical barriers that have divided the community, Gugutiantkari remains a symbol of resilience. The region is traditionally known for its agriculture, particularly fruit orchards, which thrive in the fertile soil of Shida Kartli. Efforts are ongoing to improve local infrastructure, including water supply and roads, to support the community and ensure that residents can maintain their livelihoods in the face of ongoing occupation.
