Geography and Location

Gudarekhi is a quiet village situated in the Tetritskaro Municipality of the Kvemo Kartli region.

• Elevation: 1040 meters above sea level.
• Setting: Located on the eastern slopes of the Bedeni Ridge, surrounded by the scenic Algeti Valley.
• Environment: The village is characterized by its high-altitude landscape and dense forests, offering a peaceful retreat from the lowlands.

The Gudarekhi Monastery Complex

The village is renowned for its 13th-century monastery complex, a masterpiece of medieval Georgian architecture.

• Main Church: A single-nave hall church built during the reign of Queen Rusudan (1222–1245) by the master architect Chichaphorisdze.
• The Bell Tower: Constructed in 1278, this two-story structure is the earliest dated bell tower in Georgia.
• Historical Ownership: Over the centuries, the monastery served as a royal foundation and later as a familial abbey for the noble Germanozishvili family.

Historical and Cultural Context

Archaeological excavations in the late 1930s revealed that the area around the monastery was once a significant urban settlement.

• Medieval City: Remains of a medieval town, including workshops and residential structures, were uncovered near the complex.
• Architecture: The site includes ruins of a royal palace, wine cellars (marani), stables, and monks' cells.
• Findings: Excavations yielded various artifacts, including 13th-century coins and locally produced pottery, illustrating the site's economic vitality.
