Historical Background
The name "Gorguli" is of Georgian origin, translating to "small hills," which reflects the local topography. The village has deep historical roots, appearing in Ottoman tax records as early as 1595. According to the "Great Defter of Gurjistan Vilayet," Gorguli was part of the Ude district (nahiye) of the Akhaltsikhe province (liva). At that time, it was inhabited by Georgian Christian families, including the households of Vardzel Martsvalasdze, Gogocha, and Papuna.
Local Context and Traditions
Historically, the village was a hub for diverse agricultural activities. Records from the late 16th century indicate the cultivation of wheat, barley, rye, and millet, alongside thriving beekeeping and livestock farming. Today, the local community is largely composed of descendants of settlers from the Imereti and Adjara regions. This blend of regional backgrounds has shaped the village's unique cultural landscape, preserving traditional Georgian mountain life.
