Geography and Location
Gombori is situated in the Sagarejo Municipality of the Kakheti region, Georgia. The village lies on the southwestern slopes of the Tsiv-Gombori Range, along the banks of the Gombori River. Historical Significance
The village's history is deeply intertwined with the mountain range that shares its name. While the Tsiv-Gombori Range has been mentioned in records since the 11th century, the village itself appears in historical documents from the 18th century. Prince Vakhushti Bagrationi noted the area's fertility and productivity. Due to its strategic position on the mountain pass, Gombori has long been a point of military and logistical importance.
- In the 19th century, it hosted a Russian military contingent, specifically the Preobrazhensky Grenadier Regiment.
- During the Soviet era, the area was home to a significant military base, including a specialized missile brigade.
Community and Cultural Heritage
Gombori is celebrated for its unique cultural mosaic. Following the cessation of regional raids in the 19th century, highlanders from Pshavi and Khevsureti settled in the area. A particularly distinctive part of the community are the Lahij people, an ethnic group that migrated from the village of Lahij in modern-day Azerbaijan in the early 20th century.
- The local economy is traditionally based on fruit growing, gardening, and livestock farming.
- Notable landmarks include the Gombori Church of the Ascension, the "Adgilis Deda" shrine, and an ancient stone bridge that reflects the village's long history.
