Gomaro

Geography and Location

Gomaro is a high-altitude village located in the Adigeni Municipality of the Samtskhe-Javakheti region in southern Georgia. It sits at an elevation of 1,556 meters above sea level on the left bank of the Kvabliani River.

• The village is part of the Zanavi community.
• It is characterized by its rugged alpine landscape and crisp, healthy mountain climate.
• Located approximately 3 kilometers northeast of the municipal center, Adigeni.

Historical Context

The history of Gomaro is well-documented, dating back to at least the 16th century during the Ottoman administration of the region.

• In the 1595 "Great Defter of Gurjistan Vilayet," the village was recorded under the name "Gomaroti."
• Historically, it belonged to the Ude district (nahiye) of the Akhaltsikhe province (liva).
• Ancient records show that the early inhabitants were skilled farmers, cultivating wheat, barley, rye, and lentils, while also maintaining beehives and livestock.

Cultural Heritage and Local Life

Despite the passage of time, Gomaro preserves significant traces of its ancient Georgian heritage and unique local identity.

• The village contains the ruins of an old church, with surviving fragments of its southern wall built from massive, finely worked stone blocks.
• A sacred cross-stone (Jvariani kva) is located near the village's water source, serving as a site of local spiritual significance.
• The modern community primarily consists of descendants of families who migrated from the Adjara and Imereti regions, creating a unique cultural blend that defines the village today.
