Geography and Location

Gokhnari is a mountain village situated in the Tetritskaro Municipality of the Kvemo Kartli region. Located at an elevation of 1354 meters above sea level, it lies in the valley of the Bzistsqali River (a tributary of the Algeti). The village is surrounded by dense forests and high-altitude meadows, offering a classic Georgian highland landscape.

Gokhnari Lodovani (Megalithic Complex)

The most prominent landmark of the area is the "Gokhnari Lodovani," one of the largest cyclopean (megalithic) complexes in Georgia. Dating back to the 2nd-1st millennia BCE, this archaeological site covers a significant area and features:

  • Remains of an ancient settlement and a defensive fortress.
  • Natural fissure-tunnels and chambers carved into the rock.
  • Dolmens (megalithic tombs) and massive stone monoliths.
  • Cylindrical towers that served as watchpoints for the surrounding territory.

Historical Monuments

The village and its surroundings are home to several important historical sites, most notably:

  • St. George's Church (Adzikvi): An 11th-century basilica built from local Algeti stone. It is famous for its medieval Georgian inscriptions and unique stone reliefs depicting religious figures.
  • Village Ruins: Traces of older structures and smaller chapels can be found throughout the area, reflecting the village's long history as a settled community in the Kvemo Kartli highlands.

Natural Environment

Near the village lies Gokhnari Lake, a serene spot often visited by hikers and nature enthusiasts. The combination of high-mountain air, rich biodiversity, and proximity to the Algeti National Park makes Gokhnari an excellent destination for those interested in history and eco-tourism.
