Village

Gogasheni

A high-altitude village on the Javakheti Plateau, known for its medieval churches and breathtaking views of the Mtkvari canyon.

Village · Akhalkalaki municipality · Municipality in Samtskhe-Javakheti

Geography and Landscape

Perched on the high Javakheti Plateau at an elevation of 1,740 meters, Gogasheni is a village that offers some of the most dramatic views in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region. It sits on the right bank of the Mtkvari River, overlooking the deep, rugged canyon that carves through the landscape. The village is located about 30 kilometers from the municipal center of Akhalkalaki, serving as a gateway to the historical heart of the region. The high-altitude climate defines the local lifestyle, with crisp air and expansive horizons.

Historical Context

Gogasheni’s history is deeply intertwined with the medieval past of Southern Georgia. It appears in the 15th and 16th-century marginal notes of the "Vani Caves Rulebook," indicating its long-standing significance. In the late 16th century, specifically in the 1595 Ottoman census (the "Great Defter of Gurjistan Vilayet"), Gogasheni was recorded as part of the Tmogvi district. At that time, it was primarily known for its fertile lands used for grain cultivation, supporting the nearby fortresses.

Architectural Landmarks

The village preserves significant religious monuments that reflect its spiritual and artistic history:

  • Church of the Archangels: Dating back to the 13th-14th centuries, this structure is built from finely hewn local grey stone. Its eastern window is adorned with intricate double-beaded carvings, a hallmark of medieval Georgian masonry.
  • Church of the Virgin Mary: A 19th-century addition to the village, this church houses a precious artifact—a fragment of an early medieval stone stele. The carvings on the stele, featuring human figures, crosses, and symbolic animals, provide a glimpse into the early Christian art and symbolism of the region.

Local Life and Surroundings

Gogasheni is one of the predominantly Georgian-populated villages in the Akhalkalaki municipality. The local community is traditionally involved in cattle breeding and agriculture. Its proximity to Vardzia and Tmogvi Castle makes it an ideal spot for hikers and travelers seeking to explore the authentic, less-trodden paths of the Javakheti highlands.
