Girevi

Geography and Location

Girevi is a high-mountain village nestled in the historic Tusheti region of Georgia, specifically within the Pirikiti community. Perched at an elevation of 2,017 meters above sea level, it sits on the left bank of the Pirikita Alazani River. Administratively part of the Akhmeta Municipality, it is located approximately 50 kilometers from Omalo, the central hub of Tusheti.

Historical Significance

Historically, Girevi served as a vital hub for the Pirikiti valley. During the Soviet era, as neighboring villages like Hegho, Chontio, and Dakurta were gradually abandoned, many of their residents relocated to Girevi, making it the last village in the community to lose its year-round population. The village was traditionally inhabited by families with the surnames Azikuri, Khosikuridze, and Shuaridze.

Architecture and Landmarks

The village is characterized by its compact layout, consisting of about 40 structures built using traditional dry-stone masonry with local shale. Its most prominent landmark is a five-story defensive tower located to the west. This tower is unique for the small rhomboid patterns decorated on its facades. In 2018, Girevi was officially designated as a Cultural Monument of National Importance, highlighting its architectural and historical value.

Local Context and Tourism

Today, Girevi is a key point for border security, housing a Georgian Border Police post due to its proximity to the northern border. For travelers, it is a famous waypoint on the trekking route connecting Tusheti to Khevsureti via the Atsunta Pass. While mostly empty in winter, the village comes alive in summer with shepherds and hikers seeking the raw beauty of the Caucasus.
