Geography and Location
Giorgeti is a village situated in the Lagodekhi Municipality of the Kakheti region, at an elevation of approximately 250 meters above sea level. The village is nestled within the Alazani Valley, on the right bank of the Kabali River. It is located about 19 kilometers from the municipal center, the town of Lagodekhi.
History
The village was established in 1919 by Georgian settlers, primarily from the Racha region, who had previously lived in Alagir, North Ossetia. Following their return to Georgia, the government at the time allocated land for them in what was then the Sighnaghi district. During the Soviet era, from the 1930s until 1990, the village was known as Ordzhonikidze. It regained its historical name, Giorgeti, shortly before Georgia regained its independence.
Local Context
Giorgeti serves as the administrative center for a local community that includes the neighboring villages of Gujareti, Verkhvis Mindori, Lapniani, and Pichkhisbogiri. Historically, the local economy has been centered around agriculture, with a focus on tobacco cultivation, viticulture, and livestock farming. The village has a legacy of agricultural excellence, with several residents receiving high state honors for their contributions to farming during the 20th century.
