Village · Gori Municipality · Shida Kartli
Ghvarebi is a rural settlement located in the Gori Municipality of the Shida Kartli region, positioned at an elevation of 1,100 meters above sea level. It occupies the northern slopes of the Trialeti Ridge, specifically within the valley carved by the Atrebi River, a tributary of the Tana River. Situated approximately 11 kilometers from the city of Gori, the village falls under the administrative oversight of the Ateni community.
Industrial and Historical Significance
The village maintains a notable place in the historical records of the region due to its past industrial activity. In the 1840s, the Eristavi family—specifically Princes Elizbar and Dimitri Eristavi—established a glass manufacturing facility on their local estate. This enterprise operated until the late 1870s, acting as a center of economic activity for the surrounding valley during the 19th century.
Architecture and Heritage
The landscape is marked by the Church of St. George, an architectural structure dating to the late feudal period. It serves as the primary historical landmark of the village, representing the local architectural traditions of the era.
Landscape and Access
Surrounded by the steep terrain of the Trialeti Ridge, Ghvarebi experiences a mountain climate characterized by cooler temperatures compared to the lowlands of the Kura River valley. The vegetation is defined by the mountain forests that define this section of Shida Kartli. Access to the village is managed via mountain roads that follow the contours of the river valleys, connecting the settlement to the main municipal infrastructure in the Gori area.
