Geographical Location

Ghvarebi is a picturesque village situated in the Gori Municipality of the Shida Kartli region, at an elevation of 1,100 meters above sea level. It is nestled on the northern slopes of the Trialeti Ridge, within the valley of the Atrebi River, which is a tributary of the Tana River. The village is located approximately 11 kilometers from the city of Gori and is part of the Ateni community.

History and Heritage

The village holds a unique place in the industrial and cultural history of the region:

  • The Eristavi Glass Factory: In the 1840s, Princes Elizbar and Dimitri Eristavi established a glass factory on their estate in Ghvarebi. This enterprise was a significant industrial venture for its time and remained operational until the late 1870s, marking a period of local economic development.
  • St. George Church: A notable architectural landmark in the village is the Church of St. George, which dates back to the late feudal period and stands as a testament to the village's long-standing community.

Natural Context

Due to its high-altitude location on the Trialeti Ridge, Ghvarebi enjoys a crisp mountain climate and is surrounded by lush greenery. The Atrebi River valley adds to the natural charm of the area, making it a quiet retreat in the heart of Shida Kartli. The surrounding forests and mountain trails offer a glimpse into the untouched beauty of the Georgian highlands.
