Ghado

Geography and Location

Ghado is a high-mountain village situated in the Akhalkalaki Municipality of the Samtskhe-Javakheti region, Georgia. Perched at an elevation of 1707 meters above sea level, it is a characteristic settlement of the Javakheti plateau, offering a rugged yet beautiful landscape. The village is located approximately 19 kilometers north of the municipal center, Akhalkalaki.

• Natural Surroundings: To the north of the village lie the slopes of the Trialeti Range, providing a dramatic backdrop to the settlement.
• Proximity to Water: The scenic Tabatskuri Lake is located to the northeast, adding to the natural appeal of the area.
• Accessibility: Ghado is positioned on the western side of the highway connecting Akhalkalaki and Bakuriani, near the southern part of the Nizatskaro Pass.

Historical Context

The history of Ghado is marked by periods of depopulation and resettlement. After being abandoned in the 17th century due to regional conflicts, the village was brought back to life in the second half of the 18th century. The ancestors of the current residents were primarily Armenians who migrated from the Karin province of Western Armenia. In 1918, the community was further enriched by refugees fleeing from Bayazet and Alashkert.

Cultural Heritage

Several historical landmarks in and around Ghado testify to its enduring heritage:

• Church of Saint Gregory of Narekatsi: This church serves as the spiritual heart of the village, named after the revered Armenian monk and poet.
• Ancient Cemetery: An old cemetery with historical tombstones can be found in the village, reflecting the long-standing traditions of the local community.
• Archaeological Sites: The surrounding area contains remains of ancient settlements, suggesting that the region has been inhabited since antiquity.

Local Life

Administratively, Ghado is part of the Azavreti community. Life in the village is shaped by its high altitude, with agriculture and livestock farming being the primary occupations of the local inhabitants. The village remains a place where traditional customs are preserved amidst the stunning highlands of southern Georgia.
