Ghado

Ghado is a high-mountain village situated in the Akhalkalaki Municipality of the Samtskhe-Javakheti region, Georgia. Located at an elevation of 1707 meters above sea level, it is a characteristic settlement of the Javakheti plateau, positioned approximately 19 kilometers north of the municipal center, Akhalkalaki. The village sits to the west of the main road connecting Akhalkalaki and Bakuriani, near the southern approaches to the Nizatskaro Pass.

Geography and Landscape

The village occupies a rugged highland terrain that defines the character of the Javakheti plateau. To the north, the slopes of the Trialeti Range provide a prominent physical boundary, influencing the local climate and seasonal patterns. The surrounding landscape consists of open grazing lands and undulating meadows, typical of the high-altitude volcanic plateau. The proximity to Lake Tabatskuri to the northeast further emphasizes the village's position within a significant hydrological and natural area of the region.

Historical Context

The historical development of Ghado reflects the patterns of movement and resettlement common in the Javakheti region. Following a period of depopulation in the 17th century, the site was resettled in the latter half of the 18th century. Historical records indicate that the ancestors of many current residents were Armenians who migrated from the Karin province of Western Armenia. Further demographic changes occurred in 1918, when the community welcomed refugees arriving from the Bayazet and Alashkert regions, contributing to the demographic and cultural continuity of the village.
