Geography and Location

The village of Fshaveli is located in Eastern Georgia, in the Kakheti region, within the Telavi municipality. It is situated in the valley of the Stori (Shtori) River, at an elevation of approximately 460 meters above sea level. The village occupies a strategically important position, as it marks the beginning of the ascent toward the Caucasus Mountains and hosts the only motor road connecting the lowlands with the high-mountain region of Tusheti. Surrounded by fertile lands and forested mountains, Fshaveli offers a unique blend of lowland charm and highland anticipation.

Historical Past and Etymology

The name "Fshaveli" is directly linked to the migration of the Pshav highlanders. According to historical sources, settlers from the Pshavi region established themselves here during the late Middle Ages. There is evidence that Pshavs had vineyards and sacred groves (known as "sakhat'e zvrebi") in this area even before permanent settlement. However, the Stori Valley itself is a much older inhabited territory. It has been mentioned in written records since the 8th century as the "Shtori Eristavate" (duchy).

Of particular historical significance is the "Nakhchevani Fortress," which was considered one of the strongest fortifications in all of Kakheti between the 8th and 11th centuries. Historians believe this fortress was located in the vicinity of Fshaveli and the neighboring village of Lalisquri, serving as the "key" to the Stori Valley. Whoever controlled this fortress held sway over the entire valley and this strategic part of Kakheti.

Cultural Heritage and Monuments

Fshaveli is rich in historical and architectural monuments belonging to various eras. In the surroundings of the village, visitors can discover:

• Tskharostavi St. George Church: A medieval structure distinguished by its location and traditional Georgian ecclesiastical architecture.
• Kokhta Virgin Mary Complex: An important cultural monument that leaves a lasting impression on visitors with its serene atmosphere.
• St. Eustathius of Mtskheta Church: Located in the center of the village, this church serves as the primary place of worship for the local community.
• Tali Fortress: The ruins of this defensive structure testify to the strategic importance of the valley in the past.

Additionally, the village preserves remnants of old residential houses and agricultural buildings, creating a traditional picture of Kakhetian life and architecture.

Tourism and Nature

For tourists, Fshaveli is primarily known as the "Gateway to Tusheti." This is where the famous Fshaveli-Abano-Omalo road begins, which is regarded as one of the most extreme and beautiful mountain routes in the world. Many travelers stop in Fshaveli to prepare for the climb into the mountains or to rest after a long journey.

The Stori Valley itself is an attractive destination for nature lovers. Picnic areas are set up along the riverbanks, and the surrounding forests are ideal for hiking and birdwatching. The proximity of mineral springs and the fresh mountain air provide excellent conditions for relaxation and eco-tourism.

Economy and Local Life

The primary activities of the local population are traditionally cattle breeding and viticulture. Fshaveli hosts wine and canning factories, as well as a wood processing plant. The village is a vibrant and developed settlement, featuring a public school, a library, and a house of culture. In recent years, more attention has been paid to the guesthouse business, driven by the increasing flow of tourists heading to Tusheti. Fshaveli maintains the best traditions of Kakhetian hospitality, where guests are always welcomed with local wine and authentic regional cuisine.
