Geography and Nature

Fkhoveli is located in eastern Georgia, within the Gurjaani Municipality of the Kakheti region. Situated at an elevation of 820 meters above sea level, the village is part of the Arashenda community. One of the most prominent natural features near the village is the Lakbe Reservoir, which covers an area of 22 hectares and reaches depths of up to 30 meters. The reservoir is a popular spot for local fishing, inhabited by species such as carp, silver carp, and herring. The surrounding landscape is characterized by the rolling hills and dense deciduous forests typical of the Kakheti foothills, offering a serene environment for nature enthusiasts.

Historical Background

The name "Fkhoveli" is derived from the historical region of Pkhovi, from where the original inhabitants migrated to the lowlands. During the Middle Ages, the village was part of the Cheremi diocese. Following the dissolution of the Cheremi bishopric in 1757, King Teimuraz II assigned the village to the Bodbe diocese. Historically, the lands and inhabitants of Fkhoveli were under the feudal ownership of the prominent Andronikashvili noble family.

A tragic chapter in the village's history occurred in 1722, when Fkhoveli was ravaged and burned during a devastating Lezgin raid. Many residents were captured and taken into slavery, leaving the settlement significantly depopulated for a period. This event remains a poignant part of the local historical memory.

Archaeology and Heritage

Fkhoveli holds immense significance for archaeologists. The territory is home to a Lower Paleolithic settlement, with findings estimated to be approximately 500,000 years old. These discoveries place Fkhoveli among the oldest inhabited areas in Georgia, showcasing a continuous human presence from the earliest stages of prehistory. The archaeological layers provide valuable insights into the life of early humans in the Caucasus region.

Today, Fkhoveli is a small, quiet community. The local economy is primarily based on subsistence farming and livestock breeding. The fertile soil of the Kakheti region supports various agricultural activities, while the nearby reservoir and forests provide additional resources for the few remaining households.
