Village

Fartskhanakanevi

One of Imereti's oldest and largest villages, preserving traces of Colchian civilization and a rich historical legacy near Kutaisi.

Village · Tskaltubo municipality · Municipality in Imereti

Geography and Location

Fartskhanakanevi is situated on the Imereti lowland at an elevation of 73 meters. As one of the prominent villages of the Tskaltubo Municipality, it occupies a strategic position near the city of Kutaisi. The village is well-connected by major road and rail networks, making it a vibrant and accessible community in the heart of Western Georgia.

History and Archaeology

The history of the village dates back to antiquity. Archaeological evidence suggests that between the 6th and 2nd centuries BC, a significant Colchian city-fortress named Parsmanevi existed here, which was later destroyed by Roman forces in 64 BC. The village first appears in medieval written records in the 13th century under the name "Parsmanakanevi."

A major highlight of its historical importance is the "Fartskhanakanevi Treasure," discovered in 1868. This collection of gold and bronze artifacts from the 1st millennium BC provides evidence of the area's ancient cultural and economic significance.

Architecture and Landmarks

In the heart of the village stands the St. George Church, constructed in 1890. This church is a fine example of late 19th-century Imeretian ecclesiastical architecture.

Culturally, Fartskhanakanevi is renowned as the birthplace of the famous Georgian philosopher and academician Shalva Nutsubidze. His house-museum in the village preserves personal items and documents that tell the story of his life and intellectual contributions to Georgian culture.

Nature and Local Life

Fartskhanakanevi embodies the spirit of traditional Imereti. The village is known for its fertile lands, supporting diverse agriculture and viticulture. Local life is deeply rooted in Imeretian traditions of hospitality and community. Visitors can experience the authentic local lifestyle, characterized by traditional cuisine and the warm, welcoming nature of the Imeretian people.
