Geography and Nature
Erisimedi is situated in the far southeastern part of the Kakheti region, approximately 65 kilometers from the town of Sighnaghi. The village lies on the right bank of the Alazani River at an elevation of 400 meters. Its location is particularly significant as it directly borders the Balaken district of Azerbaijan.
The landscape is characterized by semi-desert and steppe environments, with hot summers and mild winters. The Alazani River plays a crucial role in the village's life; while its seasonal flooding can pose challenges, it also provides fertile silt that supports local agriculture. The surrounding pastures are vital for the livestock that many families depend on.
History
The village has a relatively modern history, having been founded in 1989. It was built to house families from the Khulo district of Adjara who were forced to relocate due to devastating landslides. The name "Erisimedi" translates to "Hope of the Nation," symbolizing a new beginning for the resettled families.
Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, Erisimedi has faced complex challenges regarding the delimitation and demarcation of the Georgia-Azerbaijan border. Parts of the village and its surrounding agricultural lands remain in a disputed zone, creating a unique and sometimes difficult environment for the local residents who navigate these unmarked boundaries daily.
Local Life and Economy
Agriculture and cattle breeding are the backbones of the local economy. Residents primarily grow potatoes, onions, and various vegetables. In recent years, Erisimedi has gained recognition for a modern agricultural venture: the "Snail Garden." This specialized farm breeds snails for export to European markets, particularly Italy, showcasing the village's potential for innovative agribusiness.
Daily life in Erisimedi is centered around hard work and community support. While infrastructure improvements are ongoing, the village maintains a public school and a local clinic. The sense of isolation due to its border location is balanced by the strong social bonds among the inhabitants.
Culture and Society
Erisimedi is a model of religious and ethnic coexistence. The population consists mostly of Adjarian Georgians, including both Muslims and Christians. A local Orthodox church and a prayer house stand as symbols of the peaceful harmony within the community. The village is also home to a small group of ethnic Kists. This blend of traditions creates a rich cultural tapestry, where different faiths and backgrounds unite in their shared identity as residents of this border village.
