- The village was first mentioned in historical documents in 1451, when it was donated to the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral.
- In the 18th century, the renowned scholar Vakhushti Bagrationi included Ergneti in his list of significant villages in the Liakhvi Valley.
- During the late 1990s, the village became famous for the "Ergneti Market," a major spontaneous economic hub between Georgians and Ossetians.
- Ergneti suffered extensive damage during the August 2008 war, with many homes burned and infrastructure destroyed.
