History

  • The village was first mentioned in historical documents in 1451, when it was donated to the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral.
  • In the 18th century, the renowned scholar Vakhushti Bagrationi included Ergneti in his list of significant villages in the Liakhvi Valley.
  • During the late 1990s, the village became famous for the "Ergneti Market," a major spontaneous economic hub between Georgians and Ossetians.
  • Ergneti suffered extensive damage during the August 2008 war, with many homes burned and infrastructure destroyed.

Architecture and Landmarks

  • The village is home to two late medieval hall-style churches: the Church of the Archangel and the Church of the Virgin Mary.
  • A unique landmark is the "August 2008 War Museum," established by local activist Lia Chlachidze in the basement of her war-damaged home.
  • The museum displays artifacts and photographs that tell the story of the conflict and the endurance of the local population.
