Geography and Nature

Eliatsminda is located in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region, within the Akhaltsikhe Municipality, in the southeastern part of the Akhaltsikhe depression. Perched at an elevation of 1440 meters above sea level, it holds the status of a high-mountain settlement. The village is situated approximately 10 kilometers from the city of Akhaltsikhe, near the headwaters of the Lertsiani River.

The surrounding landscape is characterized by its diversity: deep, forested valleys alternate with alpine meadows. The climate is moderately humid, with cold winters and long, cool summers, lending a special charm to the area throughout the seasons.

Historical Context

The name of the village—Eliatsminda—is directly associated with Saint Elias (Elijah). According to local tradition, a church dedicated to the Prophet Elias once stood here, of which only ruins remain today.

Eliatsminda is first mentioned in historical records in the 16th century. In the 1595 "Great Defter of the Gurjistan Vilayet," it is described as a deserted village, a consequence of the Ottoman conquests and the complex political situation in the region at that time. Later, the village was resettled. In 1944, during the Soviet regime, the Muslim population of the village was deported to Central Asia, significantly altering its demographic profile. Today, about 120 people live here, primarily ethnic Georgians.

Botsorisi Church: A Medieval Architectural Gem

The pride of Eliatsminda and its most significant architectural monument is the Botsorisi Church, located about one kilometer north of the village in a deep, wooded valley. It is also known as the "Chvinti Monastery."

Dating back to the 13th-16th centuries, the church belongs to the group of aisleless (single-nave) temples of Samtskhe. It features a small chapel (egvteri) attached to the northern side. The temple is built of hewn stone, and fragments of medieval frescoes can still be seen in the interior, enhancing its historical and artistic value. Although the church has partially lost its original appearance over time, it still retains its grandeur and mystical aura.

Local Life and Atmosphere

Life in Eliatsminda is peaceful and unhurried. The local population is mainly engaged in cattle breeding and agriculture. The high-mountain terrain and fertile pastures provide excellent conditions for livestock farming.

The village is an ideal destination for those seeking solitude, fresh air, and untouched nature. The local hospitality and traditional Samtskhe cuisine leave an unforgettable impression on every visitor. Eliatsminda is a place where the past and present merge harmoniously, and the beauty of nature combined with historical heritage gives the village a unique appeal.
