Geography and Nature

Dzveli Anaga is located in the Kakheti region of Eastern Georgia, within the Sighnaghi Municipality. The village sits at an elevation of 400 meters above sea level, where the slopes of the Gombori Range meet the vast and fertile Alazani Valley. Its geographic position offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Caucasus Mountains and the endless vineyards that define the region.

The climate is moderately humid, providing ideal conditions for agriculture, particularly viticulture and fruit growing. The surrounding landscape is a beautiful mix of steppe plains and deciduous forests, making it a scenic destination year-round.

Historical Background

Dzveli Anaga is an integral part of the historic Kiziki region. It is often referred to as the "Gate of Kiziki" due to its location at the entrance of this historic province. Kiziki has always been known for its independent spirit; unlike many other parts of Georgia, the peasants here were never serfs, answering directly to the King.

Historically, the village served as a vital strategic point, guarding the routes toward Sighnaghi and Bodbe. The name "Dzveli Anaga" (Old Anaga) reflects its ancient roots and its long-standing importance in the regional defensive and economic systems.

Architecture and Cultural Heritage

The village is a treasure trove for history enthusiasts. Local lore suggests there are up to 17 churches and chapels in and around the village, highlighting its spiritual significance. Notable landmarks include:

• St. Elias Church — A medieval structure that remains a central place of worship for the community.
• Tamari's Fortress — A legendary fortification overlooking the village, echoing stories of Georgia's medieval glory.

Today, Dzveli Anaga is home to approximately 1,470 residents. The primary occupation is viticulture, with local families continuing the centuries-old tradition of making wine in Qvevri (clay jars). Hospitality is a way of life here; visitors are often welcomed with open arms and a glass of local wine.
