Dzegvi — The Historical Gateway of Mtskheta on the Banks of the Mtkvari

Geography and Nature

Dzegvi is situated in the Mtskheta Municipality at an elevation of approximately 500 meters above sea level. The settlement is built on the right bank of the Mtkvari River, where the river cuts through the eastern slopes of the Trialeti Range. The landscape is characterized by riverine meadows and a moderately humid subtropical climate, providing favorable conditions for agriculture. The local nature is particularly enchanting in spring and autumn when the Mtkvari valley is filled with a vibrant palette of colors.

Historical Past: Ancient Customs and Strategic Point

Dzegvi holds a special place in Georgian history. Since antiquity, it has served as an important strategic point. According to historical sources, it housed one of the main customs posts connecting Shida Kartli with the regions of Lower and Upper Kartli.

In the Middle Ages, Dzegvi gained even more prominence. From the 12th century, it is mentioned as a "Catholicos village," meaning it was under the direct ownership of the Catholicos-Patriarch of Georgia.

Connection to Svetitskhoveli and Ecclesiastical History

The history of Dzegvi is inseparable from Mtskheta and the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral. As a Catholicos village, Dzegvi was obliged to provide certain taxes and services to Svetitskhoveli.

Of particular interest is the role of the "Dzegveli Community." According to 18th-century records, the village provided the Catholicos with 50 well-armed musketeers, two-thirds of whom were cavalry. This detachment protected the church estates and participated in maintaining order during the Svetitskhovloba festivals. Svetitskhovloba (October 14) remains the most important holiday for the people of Dzegvi, highlighting their centuries-old spiritual bond with the holy temple of Mtskheta.

Architecture: Dzegvi Trinity and Cultural Heritage

Several important architectural monuments have been preserved within the village territory. Notable among them is the Dzegvi Trinity Church, dating back to the 17th century.

• Architectural Style: The church is a hall-type basilica built of hewn yellowish-greenish sandstone.
• Historical Inscription: An inscription on the temple wall informs us that the church was built by Catholicos Nikoloz Amilakhvari.
• Other Monuments: In the village, you will also find the Church of the Mother of God and various residential or defensive structures from different eras.

Today, Dzegvi is one of the densely populated villages in the Mtskheta Municipality. Its population stands at 2,840 people. The main occupation of the locals is agriculture—viticulture, fruit growing, and vegetable farming.

Its proximity to the capital and Mtskheta makes it attractive for tourists as well.
