Dunta – A Historic Village on the Slopes of Racha Ridge

Located just 3 kilometers from the town of Sachkhere, the village of Dunta is a place where historical heritage and the natural beauty of the Imereti region coexist in perfect harmony. Historical Background

Dunta has a history spanning many centuries. It is first mentioned in written sources in the mid-15th century, specifically in a royal charter issued by King George (likely George VIII), indicating its significance during that era.

One of Georgia's most important historical monuments, the Modinakhe Fortress, stands within the village territory. For centuries, this fortress guarded the roads connecting Imereti and Racha. According to legend, its name is linked to the words of Papuna Tsereteli: "Modi nakhe" (Come and see), as he invited a guest to his impregnable stronghold.

Architectural Heritage

The spiritual center of the village is the Church of the Archangel Michael. This is a single-nave structure that was thoroughly reconstructed and enlarged in the 19th century, though it has retained its original grace.

Additionally, to the north of the village on a high hill lie the ruins of the Gorijvari Church. This late medieval monument is built of hewn stone and lime. Fragments of ancient frescoes still remain in the interior, having withstood the passage of time and continuing to tell the story of the village's past.

Today, approximately 130 people live in Dunta. Despite its small population, the village remains vibrant. Locals engage in traditional farming, viticulture, and animal husbandry.
