Dumasturi — A Historical Gem of the Pankisi Gorge

Dumasturi sits on the left bank of the Alazani River within the Pankisi Gorge, in the Akhmeta Municipality of eastern Georgia. Positioned at an elevation of 680 meters, the village is situated in a valley defined by the surrounding forested slopes and the flowing Alazani waterway. Access to the village is provided via local roads branching from the main route through the gorge, with the surrounding landscape offering a consistent view of the mountain ranges that characterize this part of the Kakheti region.

Historical Context

Historical records indicate that Dumasturi has been a settled location since at least the 18th century. Initially, the area was associated with the Onanashvili family. During the early 20th century, the demographic composition of the village expanded with the arrival of Ossetian families. Today, the community is largely composed of Kists, reflecting a shift in the cultural profile of the Pankisi Gorge over time while retaining elements of its multi-ethnic past.

Defensive and Religious Architecture

The area surrounding Dumasturi contains remnants of structures that historically functioned as part of the regional defensive perimeter:

• Fortification Ruins: Approximately 400 meters east of the village center, there are structural ruins from a feudal-era complex. These remains include sections of defensive walls and a stone tower (koshki), which served to monitor the gorge corridor.
• Church of Archangel Michael: Located within the same eastern complex, the ruins of this church indicate the presence of religious life in the area during the medieval period.
• Damasti Church: Situated to the west of the main village, this site contains the remains of a hall-style church. Though largely reduced to its foundations and partial wall segments, the site remains a documented feature of the local historical landscape.

Economy and Daily Life

The village supports a population of approximately 290 residents. Daily activity is primarily focused on small-scale agriculture, gardening, and livestock management, which utilize the fertile conditions of the Alazani Valley floor. The social structure of the village remains rooted in the traditional customs of the Pankisi Gorge, with local families maintaining practices that emphasize community and agricultural cooperation.
