Village

Dre — The Silent Guardian of the Trialeti Ridge

Dre is a historic village in the Gori Municipality, situated on the northern slopes of the Trialeti Ridge at an elevation of 1450 meters. Though currently uninhabited, its past is rich with industrial heritage and social history.

Geography and Nature

Located in the Shida Kartli region, the village of Dre sits within the Ateni administrative unit of the Gori Municipality. Perched at an elevation of 1450 meters on the northern slopes of the Trialeti Ridge, it is nestled in the picturesque Tana Valley. The village is approximately 28 kilometers from the city of Gori.

The surrounding landscape is characterized by lush mixed forests, alpine meadows, and the crisp mountain air of the Trialeti range. Historically, the Tana Valley served as a strategic corridor, which contributed to the village's significance over the centuries.

Historical Footprints

Dre was first mentioned in the 18th century by the renowned Georgian scholar Vakhushti Batonišvili in his list of villages in the Tana Valley. During times of foreign invasion, Dre served as a defensive outpost, protecting the Ateni Valley and its cultural treasures.

The Echo of the Past

In the latter half of the 20th century, Dre was primarily inhabited by an Ossetian population. However, during the Georgian-Ossetian conflict in the early 1990s, the residents left the village. Since then, Dre has remained uninhabited, with both the 2002 and 2014 censuses recording a population of zero.

Modern Status and Future

A new chapter for Dre began in 2019 when the Gori Municipality officially restored its status as a settlement. This legal move paves the way for potential infrastructure development and the revitalization of the area. Today, it is a destination for hikers and eco-tourists drawn to the mystery of abandoned settlements and the breathtaking natural beauty of the Trialeti Ridge.
