Dre — The Silent Guardian of the Trialeti Ridge

A high-altitude village in the Gori Municipality, Dre is a historic settlement located 1450 meters up on the Trialeti Ridge.

The village of Dre is situated in the Shida Kartli region, within the Ateni administrative unit of the Gori Municipality. Positioned on the northern slopes of the Trialeti Ridge at an elevation of approximately 1450 meters, it occupies a remote section of the Tana Valley. The settlement is located roughly 28 kilometers from the city of Gori, accessible via the roads leading south through the valley.

Landscape and Access

The environment around Dre is defined by the rugged topography of the Trialeti range, featuring a mix of deciduous and coniferous forests and alpine grasslands. Access to the area is primarily achieved by driving along the Tana River corridor. Due to the high altitude and mountainous terrain, the route requires careful navigation, particularly during the winter months when snow cover can impact road accessibility. The area is increasingly frequented by hikers and those interested in the quiet, abandoned landscapes of the region.

Historical Context

Dre appears in historical records dating back to the 18th century, notably documented by the Georgian geographer and historian Vakhushti Batonišvili. Throughout its history, the village functioned as a peripheral defensive point within the Tana Valley, supporting the broader security network of the Ateni region. Its location allowed for the monitoring of mountain passes and protected access routes to the interior.

Population and Administrative Status

In the latter half of the 20th century, the village was inhabited primarily by an Ossetian population. During the period of civil instability in the early 1990s, the demographic composition of the village shifted significantly, and the residents departed. Consequently, the village was recorded as uninhabited in both the 2002 and 2014 national censuses.

In 2019, the Gori Municipality took administrative action to formally restore the settlement status of Dre. This legal designation remains the current framework for the location, as it serves as a site of interest for researchers and visitors observing the social and geographical history of the Trialeti Ridge.
