Village · Gori Municipality · Shida Kartli

Didi Tsereti is a high-mountain, abandoned settlement situated in the Gori Municipality at an elevation of 1,540 meters. It occupies a position on the northern slopes of the Trialeti Ridge, near the upper reaches of the Tkhinali River. Access to the area requires traversing mountain roads from the direction of Gori, which lies approximately 48 kilometers away. While the settlement no longer maintains a permanent population, it remains a site of interest for those exploring the historical topography of Shida Kartli.

Historical and Architectural Features

The site serves as a record of historical settlement patterns in the region, characterized by structures from the 14th and 15th centuries:

  • Church of the Mother of God: Situated in the core of the former village, this single-nave church serves as the primary ecclesiastical monument. Despite structural weathering over the centuries, the masonry reflects the regional architectural style of the period.
  • Fortified Structures: Two pyramidal towers dating to the 14th–15th centuries remain on the site. These structures functioned as defensive and residential units, common in the mountainous landscapes of the region during that era.

Landscape and Environment

The environment around Didi Tsereti is defined by the high-altitude conditions of the Trialeti Ridge. The area consists of meadows and slopes that gradually transition toward the ridge line. The presence of stone ruins and overgrown garden plots marks the former extent of the village. Due to its remote location and lack of infrastructure, the area is characterized by low human interference, allowing for an observation of the natural processes reclaiming the former settlement grounds.
