Dartlo
Dartlo is one of the most impressive and fairytale villages of Tusheti, which looks like a real open-air museum with its unique architecture and alpine nature.
Dartlo — Fairytale Fortified Village of Tusheti
Dartlo is one of the most distinguished and picturesque villages in historical Tusheti, Akhmeta municipality. It is located at an elevation of 2000 meters above sea level, in the Pirikiti Alazani valley. Dartlo is entirely a cultural heritage site and looks like a real open-air museum with its unique appearance.
Architecture and Cultural Heritage
Dartlo is known for its exceptional architecture — the houses and towers here are built of slate, without any mortar. Defensive towers from the 18th century are preserved in the village, harmoniously blending with the harsh mountain relief. Special attention is drawn to the Dartlo church and the historical "Sabcheo" — the place where the elders of Tusheti made important decisions. Every stone and wall of the village preserves a centuries-old history.
Geography and Tourism
The village is built on the left side of the Pirikiti Alazani River, from where beautiful panoramas of Tusheti unfold. Although the village is almost deserted of permanent population today, it comes alive in summer — family hotels and cafes open here for travelers. Dartlo is one of the most popular tourist locations in Tusheti, where you can feel the real spirit of the mountains and enjoy untouched nature.
