Village

Chitakhevi

Chitakhevi is one of the most mystical and spiritual places in the Borjomi Gorge, home to the famous "Green Monastery".

Chitakhevi — Spirituality and Nature in the Borjomi Gorge

Chitakhevi is a village located in the beautiful heart of the Borjomi Gorge, on the left bank of the Mtkvari River. It is built at an elevation of 950 meters above sea level and represents part of the historical Tori region. The village is known throughout Georgia for its special aura, thanks to the local nature and the ancient monastic complex.

The "Green Monastery" — The Pride of Chitakhevi

The main attraction of the village is the St. George Monastery of Chitakhevi, popularly known as the "Green Monastery". This name was not given by chance — the monastery is built with a special greenish stone, which, together with the surrounding dense forests, creates an amazing color palette. The monastic complex dates back to the 9th century and is one of the most important monuments of Georgian architecture. The history of the monastery is tragic — during the Ottoman invasion in the 16th century, hundreds of monks were killed here, and the stones soaked in their blood in the river still preserve the memory of this event.

Natural Environment and Relaxation

Chitakhevi is surrounded by the forests of the Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park. The air here is distinguished by its medicinal properties, and the environment is ideal for those seeking peace and a meditative atmosphere. The village is only 10 kilometers from Borjomi, making it easily accessible for tourists.

Highlights:

  • Green Monastery — A 9th-century monastic complex with unique architecture.
  • Chitakhevi Valley — Beautiful natural landscape and river.
  • Panoramic Views of Borjomi Gorge — Impressive views of mountains and forests.

Chitakhevi is a place where you can simultaneously experience history, spirituality, and enjoy the untouched nature of the Borjomi Gorge.
