Chigho

Chigho is a historic highland settlement located within the Pirikiti valley of the Akhmeta Municipality in Tusheti. Situated at an elevation of approximately 2,140 meters, this village maintains its significance as a traditional center of local cultural and spiritual life, characterized by its stone architecture and isolation within the high Caucasus mountains.

Historical Significance

The village serves as a prominent example of the architectural traditions of the Tusheti region. The settlement is defined by its compact layout of stone houses, traditionally constructed from slate, which historically functioned as defensive structures. These buildings, often referred to as tower-houses, reflect the necessity of security and communal living in the high-altitude environment of the Pirikiti valley. Over centuries, Chigho evolved into a symbolic site, preserved largely through the seasonal return of local families who maintain ancestral connections to the land.

Spiritual Traditions

Chigho is recognized for the Lashari Cross, a shrine that holds a central place in the belief system of the local communities. This site is fundamental to the religious and social framework of the Tusheti region, illustrating the fusion of local customary law and historical religious practices. Other significant sites, including the Karati Cross and the Kavtar Khagiri shrine, are found in the immediate vicinity. These shrines remain active sites for communal gatherings and traditional rites held during the summer months.

Geography and Access

The village occupies a position on the slopes overlooking the left bank of the Pirikiti Alazani River. The terrain is characterized by high alpine meadows and rugged, rocky ridges typical of the main Caucasus Range. Access to Chigho is limited, generally requiring specialized vehicles or hiking from neighboring hubs such as Omalo. Travel to this region is strictly seasonal; due to high-altitude mountain passes and weather conditions, the road remains closed for the majority of the year, usually opening in late spring and becoming impassable by early autumn.

Village Life

While Chigho has very few, if any, permanent year-round residents, it functions as a seasonal center during the summer period. Life in the village remains tied to traditional pastoral cycles and the maintenance of ancestral shrines. Visitors may observe the original layout of the village, which has remained largely untouched by modern construction, emphasizing a connection to the historical landscape of the Tusheti highlands.
