Chigho

Chigho — Highland Tranquility and Lashari Cross in Tusheti

Chigho is one of the highest and historically most significant villages in Tusheti, located in the Akhmeta Municipality, in the Pirikiti Valley. Built at an altitude of 2140 meters above sea level, this village is one of the main centers of Tushetian culture and spirituality.

Geography and Location

The village is located on the left bank of the Pirikiti Alazani River, about 7-8 kilometers from Omalo. Its location on the slopes of the main Caucasus Range gives it a picturesque appearance. Chigho is surrounded by alpine meadows and rocky peaks, where the air is always clean and transparent.

Spiritual Treasure: Lashari Cross

Chigho is special for its shrines. Here is located the Lashari Cross, which is considered the common and most important shrine of the Tushetians. In addition, near the village are the Karati Cross and the Kavtar Khagiri shrine. These places are brilliant examples of the religious syncretism (merging of Christianity and local customs) characteristic of Tusheti.

The Village Today

Although the village is almost empty of permanent residents, Chigho comes alive again in the summer. Tushetians return to their roots to honor the memory of their ancestors and the shrines. The village maintains its original, authentic appearance — houses built of slate stone and narrow paths.
