Bochorna — On the Peak of Europe in Akhmeta

In the Kakheti region, within the Akhmeta Municipality, in Tusheti, lies the village of Bochorna. Built at an elevation of 2,345 meters above sea level, this settlement is officially recognized as the highest permanently inhabited point in Europe. Bochorna charms visitors with its harsh but majestic alpine nature and the amazing resilience characteristic of mountain villages.

Record Height and Status

Bochorna regained the title of Europe's highest settlement in 2014, when a permanent resident was recorded during the census. Previously, this status belonged to Ushguli in Svaneti. The village's permanent resident is doctor Irakli Khvedaguridze, thanks to whom Bochorna is once again considered a living settlement. This place is a symbol of loyalty to the mountains and an unbroken spirit.

Geography and Nature

The village is located in a high-mountain zone, where the climate is quite harsh—with long, snowy winters and cool summers. The surroundings of Bochorna are rich in alpine meadows and beautiful views of the Caucasus. The air here is healthy, and the landscapes are untouched. Bochorna is the best place for those who want to feel the true power and isolation of the mountains.

History and Tourism

In the past, Bochorna was more populous, but in the mid-20th century, the population was almost completely depleted. Today, the village attracts great interest from tourists precisely because of its height and unique location. A visit to Bochorna allows you to stand at the highest inhabited point in Europe, get acquainted with the Tushetian lifestyle, and feel a true mountain adventure.
