In the Akhalkalaki Municipality, on the right bank of the Mtkvari River, at an elevation of 1700 meters above sea level, lies the village of Afnia. Situated 23 kilometers from Akhalkalaki, this settlement is one of the historically interesting and naturally rich villages of Javakheti. Afnia charms visitors with its harsh but magnificent landscapes and the tranquility felt only in the high mountains.

Afnia has a centuries-old history. According to 1595 sources, it was a fairly large settlement at that time with 35 households. The most important part of the village's cultural identity is its architectural monument:
- Afnia Church — A hall-type church built of hewn stone stands in the village, representing a sample of medieval Georgian architecture. The temple has a later addition from the west, making its historical layers even more interesting.

The village is located in a strategic spot near the Mtkvari gorge. Afnia is known for its natural resources—bentonite clays are extracted here, which had great economic importance during the Soviet period. The climate here is typically Javakhetian—with harsh winters and cool summers, creating the best conditions for those seeking mountain air and tranquility.
